Extra Tools<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

While the above method is usually plenty thorough, some dentists use screening tools to make the task easier. Screening dye is a common one\u2014the patient will be asked to swish around a dye that is absorbed by sores or ulcers, making them stand out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Screening lights are similar. These lights are shined into the mouth and make any abnormalities glow a different color than the rest of the mouth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Comes Next?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If the dentist does find something worrying, they\u2019ll likely schedule a follow-up appointment with you. There are all kinds of diseases and abrasions that look cancerous at first, but most of these conditions will heal with time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If the problem is still present weeks later, the dentist will likely take a biopsy and send it to a lab for assessment. This will be the best way to determine whether cancer cells are present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
