After what feels like forever, summer has finally come around. After such a long year, it is time to make it up with some exciting plans involving friends and family. Whether you are looking to go on a vacation or just spend some time by the pool, you’re in for an exciting season! However, you won’t be enjoying yourself so much if you’re dealing with a dental emergency. Here are some ways that you can prevent dental issues throughout the duration of the season.

Use a Mouthguard

It is crucial that you get outside and stay active in order to stay healthy. But if you like to play contact sports, you are much more likely to experience a dental injury. Fortunately, this doesn’t mean that you should be sitting inside hiding from the world. Instead, ask your dentist about custom-made mouthguards. This way, you can keep your smile save while avoiding a broken or knocked-out tooth.

Cut Back on Sugary Drinks

Whether you prefer sweet tea, lemonade, or a frozen piña colada, your teeth may be in trouble if you are having too many. Drinks that are high in sugar can put you at risk for developing cavities and other oral health issues. Save these beverages for occasion and sip on some water afterwards. When you decide to have one of these beverages, use a straw to limit the contact that the liquid has with your teeth. This way, you can decrease your chances of developing tooth decay.

Go Easy on Summer Snacks

While your family is away from the classroom or office, you are bound to spend some of the time indulging in snacks. Doing so now and again isn’t a big deal, but having too many starchy or sugary snacks is very harmful and your oral health could suffer. You don’t want to be spending additional time in the dental chair to have cavities filled.  Avoid unhealthy snacks to prevent decay. If you are looking for a snack, choose something nutritious, like carrots or salted almonds.

Don’t Skip Your Dental Visits

You may not think there’s anything wrong, but your regular dental visits are still important to your oral health. By catching issues early on, dental emergencies can be avoided. Ultimately, this means less time and money spend at the dental office.

This summer, don’t leave your oral health to suffer. By using the tips listed above, you will be showing off a healthy smile when fall comes around!
