Rebuild and Protect Your Troubled Tooth

Teeth that are damaged by severe decay, fractures, or deep cracks or chips often require restorative appliances like dental crowns to function normally. Dental crowns are devices designed to mimic the shape and structure of natural dental enamel, and they can be used to rebuild compromised teeth so they can work properly and last much longer than they would without treatment. Here’s a quick look at how dental crowns from Advanced Dental Concepts work and why they may be the best way to preserve your gorgeous grin.

What Is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a common restoration that fits over the top of a broken or decayed tooth, improving its strength and protecting it from further damage. Crowns are very versatile, and, while they’re normally used to repair teeth that are too damaged to be fixed with fillings, inlays, or onlays, they can also be used as a cosmetic treatment for patients with chipped, crooked, or irregularly shaped teeth. You could also receive a crown as part of another treatment, such as to protect a tooth treated with a root canal, to act as support for a fixed bridge, or to complete a dental implant meant to replace a single tooth. Virtually anyone with compromised teeth can be an excellent candidate for dental crowns as long as they are free from oral infections like cavities and gum disease, and we can usually resolve these issues at our office if necessary to prepare a patient for the treatment.
The Dental Crown Process

It usually takes at least two appointments to receive a dental crown. During the first one, we’ll painlessly prepare the tooth to make room for the restoration (which usually means removing a small amount of dental structure). The next step is to take digital impressions of your tooth and send the data to a lab where the crown will be made. You’ll wear a temporary restoration to protect your tooth while the permanent one is being fabricated. After a few weeks, your permanent crown will be ready, and you’ll return to our dental office to have it placed.
The Benefits of Getting a Dental Crown

A dental crown can help a patient maintain a beautiful smile and excellent oral and overall health by:
- Improving their chewing ability and oral comfort
- Protecting their natural tooth from infection and injury
- Preventing the need for extraction
- Addressing several oral health issues at once
- Restoring the appearance of the smile
With excellent hygiene habits, you may be able to keep your crown in excellent shape for fifteen years or more before needing replacement.
